Solar Energy in the Mildura region - Victoria’s premier solar location

Aerial PhotographRenewable energy investment opportunities
The Mildura region is the ideal location for large scale solar development. With excellent solar resources, great infrastructure, flat terrain and a vast array of support services, Mildura has much to offer the renewable energy sector

The Mildura region has the best solar resources in Victoria, with an annual average:

  • 8.6 hours of sunshine per day
  • maximum temperature of 23.7C
  • 132 clear days per year, and
  • 18.9 MJ/(m*m) in solar exposure per day (5.3kWh/m2)

    Power Station

  • The National electricity grid runs right through the region, connecting to a terminal sub station, both of which are important factors for the location of renewable energy generation.

Our location on the Murray River allows for access to potable and raw water supplies, and we have a vast array of affordable and available land, with generally flat to gently undulating topography.

We have excellent transport infrastructure including road, rail and air, with the busiest regional airport in Victoria located in Mildura.

    Solar Systems (Silex)

Solar Systems (Silex) proposal to build a $420 million 102MW (originally this was to be 154MW) solar power station at Carwarp in the Mildura region, provides great opportunities for the renewable energy sector and regional Victoria. The project represents the largest and most efficient solar photovoltaic power station in the world.

This power station will generate clean electricity to meet the annual needs of over 40,000 homes with zero greenhouse gas emissions, and electricity output would be connected to the national grid for retail sale.

A Federal Government grant of $75 million has been secured under the Federal Government’s Low Emissions Technology Demonstration Fund (LETDF), while the Victorian Government will also support the project with a grant of $50 million. The remaining $295 million in project investment will come from the private sector.

    TRUenergy Mallee Solar Park

TRUenergy have proposed to build a 180MW (megawatt) facility using photovoltaic (PV) technology at Yatpool, 25km south of Mildura. A proposed solar power station is one of four PV projects short-listed for consideration for federal government funding though the Solar Flagships Program.

A decision on the successful bidder of Round 1 of the Solar Flagships Program is expected in July 2011. This project has received $100million support from the Victorian Large Scale Solar Project Scheme. If successful in their bid work will commence in December 2011, with the project due for completion by 2015. A plant of this size has the potential to generate electricity for up to 60,000 homes.
